Progress on improving care for newborns
In July 2023, the NHS Race and Health Observatory in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, University of Nottingham and Bradford Teaching Hospitals published a Review into Neonatal Assessment and Practice in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Newborns.
The report focused particularly on the Apgar Score, and the detection of cyanosis, and jaundice. It found that many of these tests designed to assess the health of newborns, moments after birth, are of limited and not fit-for-purpose for Black, Asian and ethnic minority babies.
Our work was highly influential and eighteen-months on, significant changes in policy, education, and clinical practice have now taken place as a result, which we have detailed in this new infographic.
