Standing in Solidarity with Jamaica

In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa which has brought devastation across Jamaica, the NHS Race and Health Observatory extends its heartfelt condolences and unwavering support to all those affected.  The storm has displaced thousands, destroyed homes, and disrupted vital services – leaving communities in urgent need of compassion and aid.

People from the Caribbean have been integral to the NHS since its inception, especially through the Windrush generation. Their legacy and continued contributions are deeply woven into the fabric of our health service, and wider society. Today, many NHS staff of Jamaican heritage are facing personal and familial hardship. We stand with them—not only in this moment of crisis but throughout the long journey of recovery and rebuilding.

We call on NHS leaders, managers, and colleagues to take meaningful action:

  • Reach out to staff of Jamaican heritage and those with family ties to the region—check in, listen, and offer support.
  • Signpost those affected to relevant support services within your organisation.
  • Champion and amplify appropriate fundraising efforts—whether local, national, or international—to help rebuild lives and communities.

Let us come together with empathy, solidarity, and purpose.
